a pile of soft hay which at the man’s request, I had quickly spread for that
purpose. She seemed so very tired and ever so grateful to at last be able to
lie down.
"There was a certain majestic air about the man and woman, particularly the
woman. I felt a strange and moving compassion toward her, and felt I must do
something to make her more comfortable, so I went to the other end of the
stables to my tiny room, and from my own bed I picked up my pallet and the
covers and took then to the couple. At least I thought the woman would be
able to rest in a bit greater comfort, and the covers would keep her nice and
warm. The man laid the pallet on top of the layer of hay, and then he helped
his wife onto it; then he spread the covers over her. He smiled at me and
said that I was most kind and thoughtful. As a slave it felt ever so good to
have a free man considerate enough to thank me for something I had done.
"I then went to the inn’s kitchen and stores, and there I gathered a few items
of food for them, nothing fancy, but enough to satisfy the pangs of hunger.
The woman ate very little, but the man ate heartily. They thanked me, and then
they thanked God with bowed heads for the blessings of the day and for ‘caring
and thoughtful people.’
